ALBERTA MARIE (BEDARD) OAKES, 96, Of Winter Street Groveton died peacefully on Friday, January 25, 2019, at Country Village-Genesis Elder Care Center in Lancaster after a lengthy illness.
Alberta was born on August 21, 1922, in Brighton, VT a daughter of Adelard and Dorilla (Charron) Bedard. She was a resident of Groveton most of her life coming from Lancaster the mid-1950s.
She worked for the Wyoming Valley and Stratford Plywood Mills. After working in the mills she started cleaning homes for many people and did so until she was no longer able to. She was a member of the St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton. She loved gardening; helping people; fly-fishing; knitting; crocheting; and playing cards.
Alberta is survived by her son Bruce Oakes his wife Janice and their two sons Sam and Matt all Groveton; four step-grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her husband of 57 years Philip Oakes on August 1, 2015; her step-son Kenneth Oakes on October 16, 2006; her parents; three brothers Albert; Henry; and Noel and five sisters Blanche Crowley; Aura Poulin; Anita Knapp Shatney; Delia Hamel and Bella Broucher.
Calling hour will be held on Wednesday, January 30, 2019, from 7-9pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Thursday, January 31, 2019, at the funeral home with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor of the St. Marguerite d'Youville Parish officiating. Burial will be in the spring in the Northumberland Cemetery.
