Obituary

BRUCE "BILL" "CHARLIE" N. De MERS, 72 of Stark Highway, passed away suddenly at his residence on Tuesday, January 30, 2007. Born April 24, 1934 in West Dummer, NH the tenth of fourteen children of Alfred and Louisia (Lemieux) De Mers, he was a lifelong resident of Stark. He attended school in Groveton. As a young man he worked for his father in the woods until he enlisted into the military. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. When he returned home he worked for the State of New Hampshire Forestry Services, then the Plywood Mill in Stratford before going to work as a pipe fitter for Diamond International and James River until he became injured and unable to work. He became the "Do It All Dad" and quite a handyman after that. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and was a sportsman. Above the "love of his life", his wife of 51 years Leona and his four children, the apples of his eye were his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church and was a past member of the Knights of Columbus counsel #2339. Bill is survived by his wife of 51 years Leona (Hickey) De Mers of Stark; his four children Deborah De Mers of Stark; Dale De Mers and wife Terri of Greenwood, SC; Dean De Mers and significant other Stacie Hickey of Stark and Timothy De Mers of Stark. Eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren with one due in July also survive him. He is also survived by two brothers Abian Demers and wife Jeanne of Biddeford, ME and David Demers of Groveton; five sisters Lucille Wentworth of Crystal; Pearl Gilcris of Groveton; Gladys Matherson and husband Thomas "Roger" of Easton, Mass.; Dorothy "Dot" Gildeau and husband Anthony "Tony" of Canton, MA and Sr. Mary Lorraine Demers of Jamaica Plains, MA; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents and seven siblings. Calling hours will be held on Friday February 2nd from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home, Groveton. Military services will be said at 7:15 pm with the rosary immediately following. Mass of Christian burial will be held on Saturday, February 3rd at 11:00 am at the St. Francis Xavier Church; State Street; Groveton. Cremation will follow with inurnment in the Emerson Road Cemetery in the spring. In lieu of flowers the family request donations to be made to a charity of one's choice, preferably one for children.
