CHESLEY CARROLL McLAIN, 95, of Lancaster Road, Groveton died peacefully on Wednesday, October 4, 2017 at Country Village-Genesis Elder Care Center in Lancaster.
Chesley was born on May 1, 1922 in Guildhall, VT son of Charles Clesson and Maryette (Willard) McLain. He was a lifelong resident of the Guildhall and Groveton area.
Chesley was a veteran of the US Army and served during WWII. He received commendation for helping march 80,000 Germans 1,000 miles in 90 days.
He was one of the founders and builders of Riverside Speedway in Groveton and enjoyed watching his grandchildren race over the years.
Before retiring, Chesley worked as a Head Oiler for James River Corp for many years.
Chesley enjoyed fishing; hunting; gardening; boating; spending time at his camp on Maidstone Lake; going flying with his grandson and picking blueberries.
Before his wife's passing in 2010 he was very devoted and an excellent care giver to Edith and enjoyed doing so. He loved all of his children and grandchildren.
Chesley is survived by his six children Joyce Bouchard and husband Paul of Groveton; Larry McLain and wife Gloria-Jean of Maidstone, VT; Wayne McLain of Groveton; Deborah MacLean and husband David of Columbia; Cheryl Thompson of Dalton, NH and Dennis McLain of Maidstone, VT; thirteen grandchildren; nineteen great-grandchildren; seven great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents; his wife of 60 years Edith Ema (Fisk) McLain on March 20, 2010; his daughter Jeanne Turner; two grandsons Harley Mason III and Christopher Turner; four brothers including his twin brother Chester "Chet"; Lyle; George and Frank and one sister Mary Brooker.
Calling hour will be held on Friday, October 6, 2017 from 12:00 to 1:00 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton. Funeral service will be at 1:00 pm at the funeral home with Pastor Steve MacLeod of the Groveton United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in the Northumberland Cemetery.
