Obituary

Elizabeth "Bette" Ann (Benway) Damon, 88, formerly of Lunenburg, VT, and Groveton, NH, most recently of Stratford, NH, died peacefully on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at Coos County Nursing Home in West Stewartstown, after a lengthy illness.

Bette was born on May 10, 1937, in Bartlett, NH, a daughter of the late John William Benway, of Marlborough, MA, and Katherine Mary (McGee) Benway, of Bartlett, NH. Bette was a graduate of Groveton High School, class of 1954. She also received her business degree from NH Technical College in Berlin and was inducted into the National Honor Society. Bette was also the secretary of the Groveton Alumni Association for several years.

Bette was employed at St. Johnsbury Trucking for many years, as well as at Weeks Memorial Hospital in Lancaster, NH. After her retirement, she enjoyed working part-time at Santa's Village, Jefferson, NH.

Bette was known for her pink house in Lost Nation, her pink car, and her love of BINGO. She collected wind chimes, enjoyed picking berries, and she especially loved Christmas. She collected many Christmas village pieces, even handmade ones from the kids. Her Christmas decorations were a sight to see.

Bette was also well known for her love of cooking and baking. She loved cooking and baking for her family and spending holidays together. She was well known for her gifts of homemade chocolates and fudge for Christmas.

Bette is survived by her daughter Lori Marcotte of Groveton, NH, son Alan Chapple of Manchester, NH, sister Roze Rich of Colebrook, NH, sister in law Juanita (Fred) Benway, two special nieces, Robin Fernald of Manchester, NH, and Heather (Fernald) Boivin and husband Marc of Fayetteville, NC, and one granddaughter Lily Truth Devlin of MA. She had a special place in her heart for two of her great nieces, Felicia (Boivin) Wickes and husband Andrew, and their three children, Katie (Boivin) Epperson and husband Floyd, and their five children, and great nephew Cody Fernald and his wife Taylor, and their child, and several other family members.

She was predeceased by her first husband Gardner Chapple, and three brothers, William Benway, Edmund "Timer" Benway, and Frederic Benway.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, September 19, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home; 100 State St.; Groveton, NH. Funeral service will be at 4:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will be held on the Saturday, September 27, 2025, at 1:00 pm in the Northumberland Cemetery.
