Obituary

Elizabeth Anne "Betty" (Newell) Langley died at Weeks Medical Center on January 9, 2014 after a period of declining health. She was born on December 3rd, 1928, in West Milan, New Hampshire, daughter of the late Rupert Albert Newell and Vivian Etta (Hunter) Newell. Betty's early school years were in West Milan. In sixth grade, she began attending Groveton schools where she graduated in 1946 as Salutatorian of her class. After graduation, Betty married Paul Craig Langley, and together they were lifelong residents of Groveton, NH. She spent the final year of her life residing at the Morrison Nursing Home in Whitefield, NH, where she met many wonderful staff and residents. Betty's first job was working at the local telephone company as a switchboard operator, connecting all of Groveton's phone calls. She then worked for six years as a receptionist and assistant to Dr. Robert Hinkley. Betty spent 22 years working in the Groveton mill office as an administrative assistant until her retirement in 1985 from James River. Her early retirement gave her the opportunity to enjoy her family, her home, her town and her many hobbies. Betty enjoyed her close friendships and frequent outings with the knitting club girls. She also found a lot of joy in volunteering at Weeks Medical Center Gift Shop during retirement. Betty rarely missed a Bingo night in Groveton and even hit the jackpot a few times. An avid Scrabble player, Betty could challenge even the most expert players. She was a reader and a crossword puzzle-solver. In good health, Betty frequented the local diner for coffee each morning, where she connected with friends and people in the community. Betty was on the original committee that founded the Groveton High School Alumni Association, and she remained active in the organization throughout her life. In addition, she was a member of the Groveton Methodist Church. Betty is survived by her two daughters, Robin June Ashe & husband Brian of Holden, ME, and Deborah Jean Montgomery & husband Wayne of Stark, NH; one sister Mary Newell Edwards & husband Allen of Front Royal, VA; her special grandchildren, Michelle Faull & husband Lee of Vail, AZ; Wesley Ashe & fiancée Erynn Call of Hermon, ME; Jeremy Ashe & wife Sarah of South Portland, ME; Allyson Monyok & husband Paul of Hampden, ME, Jennifer Nourse & husband Jim of San Francisco, CA, Meghan Montgomery of Boston, MA, and James Montgomery of Stark, NH.
