Obituary

Frank Davenport died on May 28, 2014 after a long battle with lung cancer in Berrien Springs, Mich. He was born in Freeman Ridge, Maine, on June 14, 1930 to Ivan D. and Francis D. (Dulber) Davenport. He was raised by his father and his brother, Donald Davenport, in Kingfield, Maine, his first 14 years. When his brother went into the Army, Frank was taken in by the Alvin Darrell family and was treated like one of their own children. At the age of 17, Frank had successfully completed the 11th grade and joined the Army in 1947. He was stationed in Japan as a military police officer and on June 5, 1950 was sent to South Korea with the 10th Quartermaster Battalion as a driver for Lt. General Walton Walker. He was then transferred to the Second Infantry Division and fought against the North Koreans and Manchurians. He returned home, was promoted to staff sergeant and returned to Korea to train the South Koreans. He re-enlisted and in 1952 was sent to Germany, where he served in the 7th Army Headquarters as a driver for Col. George W. Trigger. When the colonel left he became a security officer and came back to the States. Frank left the Army on December 9, 1954 and was married to his sweetheart, Jeannette Rita Demers of Groveton, to whom he was married for 41 years. He worked at the Groveton Paper Mill and James River in a number of areas for 38 eight years before retiring. He worked on the paper machines, in the beater room, and the shipping department prior to going to the pipe shop for 22 years as an assistant foreman until he retired in 1992. He also enjoyed serving the community, and worked as a part-time police officer for the Northumberland Police Department. Frank also participated in a number of church committees, and was a Fourth Degree Grand Knight in the Knights of Columbus. Frank also enjoyed crocheting and made many afghans over the years. He loved playing his instant sweepstakes tickets, cooking, going out to eat and socializing. He also loved to play cards, especially cribbage, and was very competitive. Frank was predeceased by his wife Jeannette on January 29, 1996; by six half-brothers, Rosco, Ralph, Russell and Louis Buckston, all of Maine, Donald Davenport of Groveton and Richard Davenport of Stratford; his father, Ivan Davenport, in 1981, and a sister, Joyce in 1933 at age 13 months. He leaves behind two daughters and a son, Gloria Brisson and partner Tom Covell of Groveton, Larry Davenport and partner Shirley Hillock of Stark, and Michelle and Kirby Guild of Berrien Springs, Mich.; three grandchildren, Erica Brisson, Jeremy Brisson and Nicholette Davenport; and a great-grandson, Garrett Michael Brisson. Although Frank spent most of his life as a typical northern New Englander, he resided in Michigan for the last 10 months of his life with his youngest daughter, Michelle (Davenport) Guild, her husband Kirby and granddaughter Nicholette Davenport. As was his nature, he made friends quickly and will be greatly missed by the many people he touched during his time there. Calling hours will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 22 at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, June 23 at St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton, with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Northumberland Cemetery.
