Geraldine (Gerry) M. Major, 91, died peacefully on Friday, July 3, 2026, after a period of failing health at the Merrimack County Nursing Home with her loving family by her side. She was born at home on October 1, 1934, in Groveton, NH, the daughter of Alfred F. and Maria (McClure) Gagnon. She lived in Groveton for most of her life, until 2005 when she relocated to Amherst, NH, to be closer to her family.
She graduated from Groveton High School in 1953. On August 29, 1953, she married the love of her life, Gilbert A. Major, and together they built a life centered on family, faith, love, and devotion for 31 years. They shared a love of camping, square dancing, cross-country skiing, and traveling to visit their children. Gerry worked for 24 years as a Title 1 Paraprofessional at Groveton Elementary School, where she touched the lives of many children before retiring on July 17th, 1996.
Family was the heart of Gerry’s life. She treasured time spent with those she loved, and holidays were especially meaningful to her because they brought everyone together. She had a generous spirit, a caring heart, and a quiet willingness to help wherever she was needed. As a devoted member of the Catholic Church, she gave her time through volunteer work and lived her faith through kindness, service, and compassion.
Gerry was an avid reader and loved sharing books with her daughters. She will be remembered as a caring, loving, and devoted wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great-grandmother whose warmth, strength, and love will remain with her family always.
She was predeceased by her beloved husband Gilbert Major, son Mark Major, daughter Julie Dupuis, parents Alfred and Maria Gagnon, and siblings Alfred “Vase” Gagnon, Georgette Goulet, Gloria Gagnon, Florent “Bib” Gagnon, Clarence “Bill” Gagnon, and Helen Valliere.
Gerry is survived and will be so dearly missed by her son, Gilbert R. Major and his wife Nancy, daughter Catherine Houlihan and her husband Bob, son Steven Major and wife Trudy, son-in-law Peter Dupuis, son James Major and wife Debbie, daughter Lori Gagne and husband Kevin, 11 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, along with many nieces and nephews.
No calling hours will be held. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated on Friday, July 17, 2026, at 11:00 am at St. Francis Xavier Church in Groveton with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor, officiating. Interment will follow in the Northumberland Cemetery. Donations in Gerry’s memory may be made to either St. Marguerite d'Youville Parish, PO Box 247, Groveton, NH 03582, The American Cancer Society, P.O.
