Obituary

GORDON ALBERT ARMSTRONG, 81,of Middleburg, Florida, and formerly Groveton, NH, died on Sunday, November 17, 2024, at his home, with his loving family by his side after a courageous battle with brain cancer.

Gordon was born on May 11, 1943, in Fall River, MA., the only child to the late Albert and Lilly (Holden) Armstrong. Gordon lived in Milford, NH for many years before moving to Sarasota, FL in 1978. He was a traveling salesman for twenty-five years before going to and graduating from Gupton-Jones College of Mortuary Science in August of 1986, and receiving his degree in Mortuary Science, and then moving to Groveton in 1987, when he and his wife Sue bought the then Main Funeral Home. He, Sue and their daughter Terri owned and operated the funeral home which was renamed Main-Armstrong Funeral Home in 1991, until Terri and her husband Reggie purchased it in 2004 and renamed it Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home. He also owned and operated North Country RV Transport and hauled new RVs from the factories in Indiana to NH for many years.

After selling the business in 2004, Gordon and Sue moved to Middleburg, FL where he worked for a few other funeral homes, his favorite being Aaron and Burney Bivens Funeral Home in Orange Park, FL and returned to Groveton in the summers to assist Terri until fully retiring in 2020.

Gordon and Sue were very active with their church, the Good Samaritan Anglican Church in Middleburg, Florida and really enjoyed working the monthly food give-away.

Gordon was a veteran of the US Army Reserves from 1962 to 1968 and because he was an only child, he was only able to serve stateside. He was a member of the Groveton American Legion, Post #17.

Gordon was a member of the New Hampshire Funeral Directors Association and worked his way up though the offices of the Executive Board to president in the mid 1990s. He was a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer in both NH and Florida. He was a member of the St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Groveton, NH and was a senior Deacon for many years. He was a member of the Gilkey Lodge #101, F. & A.M. of Groveton; the Benevolent Lodge #7, F. & A.M. of Milford, NH; Scottish Rite in Tampa, FL; Scottish Rite Club of Sarasota, FL; a member of the Sahib Temple Shrine of Sarasota, FL; a member of the Sarasota Chapter #66, Order of Eastern Star.

Gordon is survived by his wife of 45 years Sue D.E. (Mills) Armstrong of Middleburg, FL; three children, Sarah Stermer and husband Chris of Hudson, FL; Bill Patten of Groveton, NH; and Terri A. Charron and husband "Reggie" of Groveton; 18 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; one cousin Alice Cummings and husband Paul formerly of Dalton, NH.

Gordon was predeceased by his father Albert in April of 1978; his mother Lilly in March of 1986; and his son Clifford Patten in November of 2012.

Calling hours will be held on Monday, November 25, 2024, from 4 pm to 7 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton, with Military and Masonic prayers at 6 pm. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 26, 2024, at 11:00 am at the St. Francis Xavier Church, with Fr. Daniel Deveau officiating. Burial with military honors will follow in the Northumberland Cemetery.
