Obituary

JAMES JOSEPH "JIM" BENNETT, 85, of Groveton, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, after a courageous battle with cancer, with his loving family by his side.

Jim was born on May 18, 1939, in Groveton, NH, the son of the late James Henry and Madeline G. (Pinette) Bennett. He was a lifelong resident of Groveton.

Jim worked for 41 years at the paper mill in Groveton having started his career there on May 27, 1957. He had many positions there with the last being Beater Room Engineer. He enjoyed an early retirement from Wausau Papers starting September 15, 1998. He also worked side jobs doing carpentry and as a helper for McCormick Memorials.

Jim attended Groveton High School and enlisted in the Army at the age of 18. He proudly served his country from 1958 to 1961 holding the job of Armor Intel Specialist and attaining the rank of E-4. Jim was a member of the Groveton American Legion Post #17 for 48 years, a 3rd Degree member of the Knights of Columbus Council 2339 in Groveton, a member of the New Hampshire Fish and Game, and a member of several local ATV Clubs. He was a prior member of the Loyal Order of the Moose and Groveton Trailblazers Club.

Jim enjoyed spending time at his camp in Lancaster, NH with his family and friends. In his younger years he also enjoyed spending time at the hunting camp on Sims Hill in Lemington, VT. He was also a member of Silver Brook Sporting Club in Nash Stream for many years. He was an avid hunter and fisherman. In his earlier years he enjoyed snowmobiling, motorcycling and boating. Later in life he loved riding ATVs and traveling. He loved watching baseball and cheering on his favorite team the Boston Red Sox. He also enjoyed watching western movies and listening to classic country music. First and foremost, Jim enjoyed spending time with his family, especially the grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jim is survived by his wife of 64 years Janet (Atkinson) Bennett of Groveton, three children Donna Hall and husband Cliff of Groveton, Randy Bennett and wife Karie of Lancaster, and Tod Bennett and wife Betty of Kissimmee, FL, nine grandchildren Steven Pecze, Alex (Hall) Cote, Amanda (Bennett) Gilman, Savannah (Bennett) Dull, Dan Bennett, Katie (Bennett) LaMontagne, Preston Bennett, Monica (Gillis) Poulin, and Elaina Bennett, five great-grandchildren Amelia, Paulie, Easton, Myles, and Quinn, and special nephews Devin Atkinson, David Atkinson, and Eric Breault. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Madeline Bennett, his sister, Sylvia Montanye, his niece, Bonnie Bennett, and his granddaughter, Samantha Bennett.

Graveside service with military honors will be held on Monday, May 19, 2025,at 12:00 noon, in the Northumberland Cemetery with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor of St. Francis Xavier Church, officiating.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton.
