Obituary

JOE HENRY SHANNON, 86, formerly of Stark, died peacefully on March 9, 2026, at the Country-Village Genesis Elder Care Center in Lancaster, where he had been a resident since November 2019.

Joe was born on March 28, 1939, in Sussex, New Brunswick, Canada. He was one of seven children of the late Ralph and Ida (Barlow) Shannon. Joe and the family moved to Groveton when he was only 7 years old.

Joe enlisted in the US Army, where he served on active duty for nine of his ten years enlisted and was a Military Police officer. He was stationed in Panama and Ft Devens. He talked a lot about Panama and said that he wanted to go back, which he unfortunately never got to do. He was a member of the Groveton American Legion, Post #17, and of the MOOSE Club.

Before retiring, Joe worked for many years in the paper mills in Groveton. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, telling stories, and always had a few jokes to tell as well. He loved riding the back-roads and snacking on Life Savers, mowing his lawn, and playing musical instruments, including the harmonica, banjo, and his favorite, the guitar. Joe's most favorite thing to do was spend time at his beach behind his house along the Upper Ammonoosuc River, where his Celebration of Life will be held in the summer.

Joe is survived by his son Douglas Shannon and wife Roxane of Stark, six grandchildren, Tanisha, Cody, Skye, Destiny, Hunter, and Spencer, seven great-grandchildren, Emily, Natalie, Karter, Harper, Blayzden, Josiah, and Henry, and one sister, Helen Maculley of Wilmington, Delaware.

Joe was predeceased by his wife of 56 years, Sylvia (Ricker) Shannon, on April 7, 2015, two daughters, Laurie Mary Shannon and Terry Lee Shannon-Miles, three brothers, Edwin Shannon, Otis Shannon, and Fred Shannon, and two sisters, Jean Fairweather and Mary Shannon.

There will be no services at this time; a celebration of life will be held later this summer on the beach behind Joe's house in Stark. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Joe's name to the Riverside Animal Rescue, 236 Riverside Ave., Lunenburg, VT 05905.
