JOHN MAURICE PEPAU, 85, of Percy Road died peacefully after a sudden illness on Friday, September 12, 2014 at Week's Medical Center in Lancaster. John was born on April 10, 1929 in Rumney,NH a son of the late John A. and Ethelyn (Emery) Pepau he has lived most of his life in Stark. John served his country in the US Navy from 1948-1950. He worked for Emery Plumbing for several years before working for the Town of Northumberland for twenty plus years as the Water/Wastewater Operator before retiring in 1991. He was past president and treasurer of the Stark Pew Owners Association; treasurer of the Stark Improvement Fund for over 30 years; past Master of the Pilot Grange in Stark; past Master of the Groveton Grange and current member of the Stratford Grange. He was past Master of the Androscoggin Valley Pomona and the Upper Coos Pomona; member of the NH State Grange and the National Grange. He was a member of the National Rifle Association; worked as a ballot clerk for the Town of Stark for many years; and assisted with the Fiddler's Contest. John enjoyed woodworking and his most prized work is the waterwheel in his back yard. He loved hummingbirds; cooking contests with and against his wife Frances; a good cribbage game with the "Pepau Poke". He will always be remembered for his Chex mix (everyone got a box of it for Christmas) and his spaghetti sauce and donuts he brought to every 4th of July family reunion. John is survived by his wife of 62 years Frances (Sullivan) Pepau of Stark; three children, Deborah "Deb" Hartwell and husband Steven of Lyndonville, VT; John "Jack" Pepau, Jr. and wife Ellen of Stark; and Joanne Fournier and husband Keith of New Boston, NH; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and two sisters; Betty Rowell and Zanita Bacon. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, September 18, 2014 from 5-8 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton. Funeral service will be held on Friday, September 19, 2014 at 11:00 am at the Stark United Methodist Church with Pastor Danielle J. Rodrigues officiating. Burial will follow in the Emerson Road Cemetery.
