Obituary

Lois “Lucy” Hubbard, age 73, passed away on April 7, 2026, after years of suffering from early-onset dementia. Lucy’s family and friends take comfort in knowing that she is free from the illness that challenged her in life.

She was born July 12, 1952, just two days and five years after her sister, Maureen, “Mo” Ecke, her lifelong best friend, who passed in 2022. Lucy’s parents were Edgar B. McClure, USN, a World War II Navy Ace, the last Flying Tiger to become an ace, and Lois Lott McClure, SI USNR. She spent most of her childhood with her sisters, Mo and Lonnie, growing up on the beaches of St. Simons Island, Georgia.

After graduating from Bemidji State College in Bemidji, MN, she embarked on a career as an art teacher. Teaching art was always what she wanted to do with her life, and she brought her passion to many classrooms over the years in New Hampshire’s Monadnock and White Mountains regions.

Art brought her joy. Lucy’s home was bursting with color, the walls adorned with original pieces that she created.

She loved the outdoors and often took walks in the woods behind her home in Lyman, NH. Kayaking was another favorite, and snowshoeing.

Lucy had the most contagious laugh. You couldn’t help but join in once she got going.

She loved her dog, Sweetpea, and rescue “cat” Fat Eddy. We’re pretty sure he was a bobcat that wandered onto her property and never left.

Her favorite place was Popham Beach, Maine. There she walked the surf, taught her grandchildren how to boogie board, hunted for sand dollars, drank wine, and simply sat in her chair as she watched the waves turn. She always said it reminded her of St. Simons, her childhood home.

Lucy loved to travel, taking many trips with Mo all over the world. There is no doubt that they are now having new adventures together.

She is survived by her daughter Heather (Gillis) Harris and her husband Jason Michonski of Mansfield, MA; son Aaron Gillis and his wife Christine of Surry, NH; sister Lonnie (Barland) Soldi and her husband Stephen of Point Loma, CA; her grandchildren Dexter, Vivien, Nolan, Natalia and Coraline; nephews Richard and Sean, her dear friends Sally (McKee) Hofmeister of Burnsville, MN and Merrily Leong of Honolulu, HI.

For those who wish, donations can be made in Lucy’s memory to Coos County Nursing Home, Memory Care Unit, 136 County Farm Rd.; West Stewartstown, NH 03597-0010.

A celebration of life is planned for Saturday, April 25, at 1:00 pm, at the Landaff/Lisbon Federated Church, 49 South Main Street, Lisbon, NH 03585. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home, 100 State St., Groveton, NH. For directions to the service or to send the family your condolences via the online guest book, please visit www.armstrongcharronfuneralhome.com

Cards can be sent to Heather Harris (190 West Street, Mansfield, MA 02048 or Aaron Gillis (58 Old Farm Road, Surry, NH 03431).

In the meantime, Lucy would be thrilled if the next time you saw wildflowers growing on the side of the road you would pull over and pick some. Take them home and display them in a vase. She always said that fresh flowers changed the “feel” of a home for the better.
