LORENZO "ZOE" JOSEPH CLOUTIER was born May 17, 1927, in Berlin, NH, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, October 28, 2020, with his loving family by his side at the age of 93. He was the twelfth living child of Rosanna (Bergeron) and Adilard Cloutier. All his brothers and sisters predeceased him; Victor, Amadee, Florida, Oliver, Arthur, Rosario, Antonio, Lucille, William, Florence, and Anita.
Lorenzo moved to Northumberland at the age of three and then to Groveton at age five. He attended the Groveton schools and enlisted in the US Navy in 1945. After his service in the Navy, he returned home and worked for George Cole as a carpenter, then he worked ten years in the Converting plant for Groveton Paper Company on a pen ruling machine. After he married Madeleine Martin in 1956 he moved to Detroit, Michigan for six months working for the Wolverine Gasket Company as a press cutter. He then moved to Newark, New Jersey where he worked for Mohegan Paper running a ruling machine. He moved back to Groveton in 1959 and resumed working for Groveton Paper Company. He worked as a broke man in the number one finishing room, worked on a Pen Machine, a cleaner in the bleach plant, and on the conveyer in the Sulfite Mill. He worked several years on a Jones Pulper in the Beater Room and then as an Incinerator Operator. He also worked as a Utility man in the Pulp Mill and for the last few years in the Grinding room. He retired from the James River Corporation on May 29, 1992.
For many years he worked on his own as a carpenter and built his family's cottage at Maidstone Lake, VT. He enjoyed having coffee in the morning on the patio with his family, watching the sun come up over the mountains at his Maidstone Camp. He also enjoyed playing horseshoes with his friends and family and loved to dance and snow machine.
He was a member of the American Legion, Post #17, and an Honorary Life Member of the Knights of Columbus.
Zoe is survived by his wife of 64 years Madeleine (Martin) Cloutier of Groveton; five sons Rodney & Joyce (Clark) Cloutier of Montpelier, VT; Mark & Barbara (Boudle) Cloutier of Groveton Lionel Cloutier and Julie McLain of Groveton; Lorenzo & Rebecca (Baldwin) Cloutier of Auburn, Cal.; and Patrick Cloutier and Jill Burke of Lebanon, NH; two daughters Claudette and Dennis Pinette of Newport, NH and Denise and Alex Johnston of Groveton; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be held on Saturday, October 31, 2020, at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home, 100 State St., Groveton from 10:00 am to 12:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be at 12:30 pm at the St Francis Xavier Church in Groveton with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor, officiating.
