LYLE EDWIN "CAKIE" HERSOM, 78, of Lancaster Road, Groveton, died peacefully May 6, 2007 at Cambridge Hospital in Cambridge, Mass., with his family by his side, after a lengthy illness. Born in Northumberland, NH on August 9, 1928 a son of Edwin W. and Ethel L. (Tompkins) Hersom, he was a lifelong resident. Lyle graduated from Groveton High School in 1948 and married Ruth McFarland in 1949. He sold school supplies for Mainco Supply Co., before becoming a New Hampshire State Legislator. Cakie was on the Governor's Council and was a New Hampshire State Liquor Commissioner for 13 years. He was a Lancaster Fair Director for 47 years and was know as the "Voice of Lancaster Fair". Lyle was a veteran of the United States Army serving during the Korean Conflict as a cook. He was a member of the Mason Gilky Lodge F & AM 101 and a 37 year member of the Groveton American Legion, Fredonwarell post # 17. Cakie is survived by his loving wife of 57 years Ruth (McFarland) Hersom of Groveton; two sisters Maggie Gilbert of Groveton and Sylvia Martin of Lancaster; one Aunt Cora Brown of Portland, Me and several nieces and nephews. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday from 7-9 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home; 100 State Street; Groveton. Funeral services will be held on Thursday at 11:00 am at the funeral home with the retired, Rev. Brendan Whittaker officiating. Burial will follow in the Northumberland Cemetery.
