PHILIP HAROLD OAKES, 95, of Winter Street in Groveton, died peacefully on Saturday, August 1, 2015 at Coos County Nursing Hospital in West Stewartstown after a lengthy illness. Phil was born on May 29, 1920 in Percy, NH a son of Wilfred and Eva (House) Oakes and has been a resident of Groveton most of his life. Phil was a veteran of the US Army from June 1944 until February 1946 serving in Italy in the 10th Mountain Division. Before retiring in 1986 he worked as a welder for James River Corp. for 40 plus years. He was a State of New Hampshire Fire Warden for 40 plus years. He was a member of the Gilky Lodge #101 F & AM of Groveton; the American Legion Post # 17 and the VFW Post # 6808 and the Disabled American Veterans. He loved hunting and fishing. Phil is survived by his wife of 57 years, Alberta (Bedard) Oakes of Groveton; son Bruce Oakes and wife Janice of Groveton; daughter-in-law Mary Oakes of North Stratford; six grandchildren Valerie Leborg; Kristin Frazer and husband Donald; Dee Towle and husband David; Kenneth Oakes, Jr. and wife Danielle; Sam Oakes; and Matt Stanton; several great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; one sister, Mary Paul of Concord, NH; and one brother, Edward Oakes of Pennsylvania; few nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by one son Kenneth Oakes, Sr. on October 16, 2006. Calling hours will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2015 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton, NH. Funeral service will be held on Thursday, August 6, 2015 at 11:00 am at the funeral home with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor of the St. Francis Xavier Church, officiating. Burial will follow in the Northumberland Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice.
