Rex Earl York died October 14, 2010, just eleven days before 102nd birthday at Holton Point in Lancaster. Mr. York was born October 25, 1908 in Northumberland, NH the son of George and Jessie (O'Meara) York. He graduated from Groveton High School in 1927 and subsequently from Bridgeport, CT Vocational School as an electrician. He returned to Northumberland where he married Hattie (Gray) York on August 16, 1936 and they built their home. He was a self-employed electrician until his retirement. During World War II he works for three and one half years in the Portsmouth, NH Naval Yard. The family lived in Durham during that time. He was a great lover of sports, following high school and professional teams. In the mid-30's he and his friends skied in Littleton, NH using the rope tow; they moved on to Cannon and Cranmore Mountains when they opened in 1938. Mr. York was a member of the Groveton United Methodist Church and an active worker in the United Methodist Men's Club. He was a 60 year member of the Gilkey Lodge No. 101 of the Masons and a 32nd degree Mason. After fifty years as a Mason he received the Major General John Sullivan Distinguished Service Medal. He also received the Centenarian Award, in 2008, from the Masons for turning 100 years of age. At age 94 the Town of Northumberland (Groveton) presented him with the Boston Post Cane as the oldest citizen of Northumberland. He is survived by his wife of 74 years, Hattie (Gray) York; two daughters, Brenda Allen of Vero Beach, FL.; and Linda Muldoon of Potomac. MD; a grandson John Muldoon, Jr. of Arlington, VA; a great-granddaughter Kate Muldoon and a great grandson Rex Muldoon of Arlington, VA; a sister Mrs. Nelson (Theo) Ricker of Woodsville/Lancaster, NH and a niece and several nephews. He was predeceased by a grandson Steven Muldoon and two brothers Max York and Horace (Ted) York. Calling hours will be held on Thursday, October 21, 2010 from 4-6 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton. Funeral service will be held on Friday, October 22, 2010 at 1:00 pm at the Groveton United Methodist Church with burial following in the Ridgewell Cemetery in Guildhall, VT.
