RICHARD JAMES "PAPA" POWELL , 73, of Old Village Rd in Northumberland died Sunday, March 18, 2018, at his residence after a sudden illness.

Richard was born on December 28, 1944, in Lancaster, NH a son of John William Powell, Sr. and Manola (Young) Powell. He has been a resident of Northumberland most of his life.

Richard was a Graduate of the Lancaster Academy, class of 1963. He then joined the US Army and served his country during the Vietnam War.

Richard assisted his partner Bernard Dupuis in the daily operations of Dupuis Country Store for many years until its closing several years ago.  He enjoyed rug hooking and baking. He collected knick-knacks and all sorts of elephants.

Richard is survived by two sisters Barbara Rollins of Sanbornton, NH and Patsy Kovacs and husband Al of Lunenburg, VT; one brother Robert Powell and wife Fran of Sanbornton, NH; his goddaughter Bernadine "Bernie" Sandillo and husband Steven of Northumberland and many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his parents and two brothers John William "Billy" Powell, Jr.; and Lawrence "Gomer" Powell.

Calling hours will be held on Friday, March 23, 2018 from 5-7 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton. Funeral service will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 10:00 am at the funeral home with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor of the St. Marguerite d'Youville Parish officiating.
