WILLIAM "BILL" VAIL KNAPP, JR., 81, of Eaton Street, North Stratford, died Monday May 22, 2006 at Country Village-Genesis Elder Care Center in Lancaster where he had been a resident since March 2005. Born June 20, 1924 in Keyport, New Jersey the son of William Vail Knapp, Sr. and Mildred (Sheldon) Knapp, he has been a resident of North Stratford for 8 years coming from Raymond, NH. Before retiring Bill worked for the State of New Hampshire as a bridge construction foreman. Bill was a U.S. Navy Veteran serving as a Boatswain, 1st class during WWII. He was a life-member of the V.F.W., Cooties and the American Legion. He was also a member of the Loyal Order of the Moose, Groveton. He enjoyed camping and had camped for over 25 years at the Bog. He also enjoyed fishing, hunting and dancing. Bill is survived by his wife of 35, Mildred M. Knapp of North Stratford; Son William L. Knapp and wife Kathleen of Calais, VT; Son Jerry Gagne of Groveton; Daughter Margaret Costello and husband Timothy of Pembroke, MA; Daughter Marie Taylor and husband Jim of Center Junction, Iowa; 17 grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren and a sister Marjorie Spray and husband Herbert of Forked River, NJ; along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by both his parents, his first wife of 27 years Margaret L. Knapp in 1969 and a daughter Dorothy Finch. At Bill's request there will be no calling hours. A memorial service with military honors will be held Saturday, May 27th at 2:00 PM at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home; Groveton with Rev. Sherry O'Bara, pastor of the Groveton and Stark United Methodist Churches officiating.
