NELSON LUCIEN "POP" FONTAINE, 82, of Lost Nation, Groveton, died peacefully at home on Saturday, January 28, 2023, with his loving family by his side.
Nelson was born in Lyndonville, VT on August 6, 1940, a son of the late George and Mary (Gagne) Fontaine and has been a resident of New Hampshire since the age of 6.
Pop was a veteran of the US Navy and served during the Cuban Conflict missile crisis.
Before retiring, Pop owned and operated his logging company, Fontaine Logging. Prior to that he worked construction as a grader operator. He worked several years for the Alaska Pipeline and was part of the first crew to create I-93. He was a licensed pilot. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, flying RCAs and playing poker.
Pop was a member of St. Francis Xavier Church, VFW, American Legion, Groveton Fish and Game Club and the Guildhall Fun Fliers.
Nelson is survived by his wife of 63 years Barbara (Doyle) Fontaine of Groveton, five children Lisa Marshall and Gregg; Lorie Bailey and Rod Swift all of Groveton, Lynn Berry (Cedar Ronish of Lancaster) of Guildhall, VT, and Mark Fontaine and Crystal of Lunenburg, VT, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by one son Luke Fontaine on April 6, 2019, one son-in-law William Berry on July 9, 2013, three brothers Roland, Lionel, and Leonard, and one sister Doris Woodward.
Memorial calling hours will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2023, from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm at the Armstrong-Charron Funeral Home in Groveton. Funeral service will follow immediately after at 2:00 pm at the funeral home with Fr. Daniel Deveau, pastor of St. Francis Church officiating. Military honors will follow at the funeral home.
